At the start of each session, you will be prompted to choose your preferred language. English is set as the default. Select the language you would like to use throughout the simulation, then click “Continue” to enter the VR Lobby.
You can return to the language selector at any time by clicking the button in the top-right corner of both the VR Lobby and My Results panels.
Important: An internet connection is required to access any languages other than English.
Your first stop will be the VR lobby, which contains a range of educational and instructional materials.
If you are new to the simulation, we recommend that you access the ‘Quick Start Guide’ and ‘VR Tutorial' before you begin the procedure.
Once you've had a browse through the resources, gaze towards the "Start Procedure" button and press any button on your haptic pen.
Important: An internet connection is required to access and stream the Quick Start Guide. If you are offline, the guide tile will appear greyed out and unavailable.
Welcome to the Operating Room! Upon entering, you will see an instruction panel in front of you. Please follow the instructions on each panel to align yourself with the patient and adjust the position of the microscope as needed.
! Reminder !
Ensure to use the alignment placemats during each session for optimal haptic feedback and experience.
Take some time to look around to familiarise yourself with the environment.
The main panel is on the left side. The patient and microscope are in front of you. On the right, you will see a tray with surgical instruments and a panel with additional guidance for selected steps.
You will be able to enter the microscope view after the Surgical Safety Check-In step (step 2).
Lean forwards to enter the microscope view and backward to exit it.
When an adverse event (AE) is triggered you will receive a real-time warning.
After each step, return to the main panel to review the AEs and their penalty points. Each AE incurs a penalty point deduction anywhere from -100 for serious AEs down to 0 for minor AEs.
During the procedure, your wrists should comfortably rest on the wrist rest and the tips of your haptic pens should be positioned a few centimeters apart.
Some interactive steps are one-handed. Insert the left haptic pen back into the inkwell or place it on the wrist rest and use your left hand to stabilize the right one.
Other steps will require both hands. The button on the left haptic pen can be pressed using the index finger or thumb - turn the pen to see the preferred position.
Please note that we have developed the application primarily for the right-handed user population. At the moment our VR application does not support changing hand dominance but we are keen to receive feedback for suggestions on improved accessibility.
After completing a procedure, your session results will be displayed. If you are connected to the internet, these results will also be saved automatically to the Fundamental Surgery Data Dashboard.
Select ‘Back’ to return to the main lobby and restart the procedure, or select ‘Exit’ to close the simulation.
